The year ahead for the coal industry |
|
2012 will be a landmark year in Australia’s energy policy debate. The Federal Government’s draft Energy White Paper has been released and through it there will be a welcome focus on critical long-term energy policy. The responsible development of our energy resources has generated enormous wealth for Australia. Sustaining this historic economic dividend will depend on policy settings that attract investment in the development of our abundant natural resources, including coal. The Energy White Paper must reflect Australia’s role as a global energy supplier and establish the conditions for this investment to occur. Australia’s carbon tax, which passed into law in November, is scheduled to commence on 1 July. It represents both the biggest single economic reform in this country for a generation and the biggest single challenge to our industry. The intersection of energy and climate change policy is, after all, where things get tough. The Australian coal sector is positioned at the heart of both of these critical issues. As its representative, the Australian Coal Association (ACA) will work constructively with governments to tackle the challenges Australia faces in responding to climate change while maintaining our enviable record of economic growth and prosperity. We embrace the responsibility that comes with being one of Australia’s biggest industries, including engaging in Australia’s public policy debate. Dr Nikki Williams |
